Why is there fans of Parsee Mizuhashi?
« on: April 04, 2025, 09:09:48 AM »
I mean I'm not saying you're wrong for liking her, but why is there people who are fans of her? She'll trash-talk you the moment you turn your back from her, and is always irrationally jealous towards everyone. What you, Parsee fans, see in her that you consider her as your favorite character? Is it due to relatability, sympathizing her, or something else?

I'm not a Parsee fan but i can kinda understand why some people would like her. Maybe they just like her design or feel bad for her, because at the end of the day Parsee doesn't really have a choice in being a jealous jerk, she IS the embodiment of jealously after all, and it doesn't seem like she can control it that well. And if Satori's words in the SA cross-review are true (which i think they are given that she can read minds), Parsee might have an heart deep down, who knows

She's easy to interpret as tsundere or yandere. And, well, a lot of people are into either of those.

For me, there's a particular gameplay moment I like. IIRC she's the only boss that doesn't have a hurtbox. Meaning you can LITERALLY hug her and she wouldn't mind. That makes it easy to conjure an image of someone who would badmouth you and the rest of the world while being extremely clingy and affectionate.

Yes, quite so, for Parsee fans,  or at least symphatetic, with her and her situation, ...  sympathetic it is very likely both due to a mixture of symphaty, interest, pity and similar. fo Parsee being "among the mostly-despised or hated Youkai"... "sundering and comparing to a certain extent her jealousy part of her nature from the rest of her nature as a character".... parySatori's experience, talent, point of view in. https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Strange_Creators_of_Outer_World/Introduction_of_Previous_Works/Subterranean_Animism/Cross_Review...  her interaction with Yamame in https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Foul_Detective_Satori (Subterannean Animosity-Part IV)

Patchouli is the only Touhou character I like based on her personality. Unless someone is earth-shatteringly evil, I tend to make up my mind about video game characters based on their appearance and theme song (where applicable; both originals and fan interpretations). These two combined push the left side of the Like/Dislike seesaw way up for Parsee:

(funnily enough, the wiki file history for that image contains discussion of Parsee being tsundere... how about that)

I tend to base my opinions on video game characters (specifically Touhou) on their personality and how they act in general, the things they do, why they do them, how they interact with other characters etc. Sure their design and theme song(s) may look and sound appealing to me, but if they have a nasty personality or are unapologetically malicious, then i won't like them (Reimu), or in rare cases i will hate them (that fire trucking tengu). Yeah it's not really a smart or sensical criteria but it makes sense to me, given that i'm a very empathetic and sensitive person who has little patience with unpleasant people

Oh, that's the reason you don't like some characters then, I see then.

Yes, that's why you can sometimes see me get very emotional and angry when talking about some characters, most notably Reimu and that crow tengu I'll admit that my reactions can be very excessive and stupid sometimes

I don't really blame you though. There are times where Reimu had gone overboard (like threating Reisen to peel her skin).....  (^^;)

Yeah, with how Reimu acts sometimes, i often find myself wondering if Zun WANTS me to hate her. I really resent how mean-spirited Touhou can get sometimes, mean-spiritedness for the sake of it is not my cup of tea, especially when it's directed towards characters that don't really deserve it (Satori and Kogasa for example). It's the only bad thing about the series as a whole IMO. I'm glad that i'm not alone in this =D

Parsee is actually really cute even in-game and I also have a thing for girls with short hair which Parsee satisfies. Her personality would be a bit troublesome if she were a real person but for being a fictional character she's fun to have for comedic value. Parsee might not be like my top 5 but I'd say she's at least top 25.

i'm a very empathetic and sensitive person who has little patience with unpleasant people

You are contradicting yourself. Someone truly empathetic would understand that behind every unpleasant person there is a relatable story that made them that way and would be tolerant to them.

Look at Parsee. Her jealousy comes from untold years of watching people have the kind of fun she never could because of being stuck around the bridge and a very understandable desire to have that eating at her all that time. And if you take her species origin into account (which is not a big stretch in Touhou because, for example, Kaguya is THE Kaguya, after all), she is stuck there in the first place due to lover abandonment. If that doesn't give you even a spark of compassion for her then you probably aren't nearly mature and experienced enough to judge people, fictional or real.

Look at Reimu. She has lived her whole life forced into a position she has no say about. Her frequent hostile attitude stems purely from the importance of it, "enemy until proven otherwise" is a stance that comes with the job. Her more senseless hostility moments come from earlier in the series, where you could take it as her still working out how far she has to go. In her idle moments she want nothing more than just being left alone, and during incidents she just wants the wrongdoers to stop their wrongdoing and nobody else to get in the way. And the incidents usually have to do with GENSOKYO'S SAFETY, mind you, so it should be understandable she's on the edge about it. Also, again, don't just ignore the times when she cooperated with and acted nicely to the youkai, which far outnumber her more questionable moments.

Look at Aya. ...Actually, your estimation of her is correct. She's arrogant and extremely ambitious, which makes her quite rough around the edges. But again, hating her is missing the point. She comes from tengu society where such attitude is intentionally cultivated, but she's about the only one of them who, instead of also being very isolationist, has a huge interest in what happens outside of it - the rest of Gensokyo. (Hatate being a very occasional distant second in that regard.) She's worth appreciating for giving her own differing insight into life out there. That is, after all, exactly why she was added to the series in the first place. Actually, think about it. She's kind of an outsider that is very interested in Gensokyo and its characters, and is very vocal about her own opinions and biases. Isn't she very much like, y'know, all of us Touhou fans? So maybe if you feel hate for her then it's just you raging at the reflection in the mirror.

You know what? You're right about everything, now that you mentioned all of this stuff to me i can kinda understand where Reimu and Aya come from and why they have a seemingly bad attitude. I still think that sometimes they go way too overboard for my tastes but i think it's finally time i stop being stubborn and accept that those moments do not define their whole personality and that there's much more to them than meets the eye. Thank you very much honestly

As for Parsee, i 100% feel bad for her, as with most citizens of the underground (like Satori and Koishi). Hell, the fact that she's so desperately jealous towards everyone and everything and can't seem to control it, is somewhat reletable to me. Sometimes there are moments where i can't properly control my emotions and end up hurting people without intending to, or saying stupid and hurtful stuff. She and the other underground citizens reallly deserve better, and i hate the fact that they're so despised by everyone around them. Hell, this is the BIGGEST reason why i like Satori as a character.

You're right about me, i call myself empathetic yet i never took the time to actually understand fictional characters like Reimu and Aya or just about any seemingly "nasty" character, because i was too deep in my own biases to actually stop and think for a moment if i was wrong.

Thanks for this post honestly, i learned a lot from this. Have a nice day

See, that's why I like detailed discussions, even about stuff we might disagree on. That's why I asked for that recent music thread. Won't deny I'm having plenty of fun myself doing such writeups just for the sake of it. But if I manage to help someone along the way then all the better. You're welcome!
